Aims & Objectives
Contribute to the formation of a more self-aware public opinion fostering analytical thinking and empathy. The capacity of media to shape public opinion in the beginning of the Yugoslav wars will be compared to their contemporary role.
Cultivate civic attitudes that can bolster effective conflict management on behalf of the EU. By recollecting the role of public opinion during the Yugoslav wars, a comparison of public attitudes towards ongoing conflicts and its impact on EU’s foreign policy will be made.
Promote EU integration by fostering reconsideration of EU’s enlargement policy and raising awareness on distorted memories and false perceptions of both sides.
Former President of the European Commission Romano Prodi once said: "Europe's only true competitive advantage is our past mistakes". In Retrospect sets off from this idea, that the EU constitutes an ongoing process rather than a completed edifice and aims to utilize the learnings derived from past mistakes and experiences in order to promote unity and integrated progress. Through collective remembrance and dialogue on EU's involvement in the Yugoslav wars, the project will enquire: a. The impact of incoherence between EU's value system and member states' national priorities and b. The role of national media in setting the agenda and leading the public opinion in major EU foreign policy decisions. EU values will be explored anew while their effective application will be promoted in both candidate and EU counties.
The project includes a series of actions at local, national and international level, namely, a kick-off meeting, a capacity building activity, field research, the production of a documentary movie, the creation of a daily newspaper archive, local events for promotion of the project’s findings and a final event for presentation of results and evaluation.
Non-formal learning will be used during project activities in an effort to decompress an emotional discourse and communicate complex notions to non-experts.
